Overview
Businesses often have large amounts of information distributed across documents, manuals, policies, knowledge bases, and internal systems. Finding the right information quickly can become difficult as the volume of data grows.
We developed a RAG-based knowledge assistant that provides a natural-language interface over business information. Instead of relying only on the knowledge stored inside an LLM, the system retrieves relevant information from a connected knowledge base and uses that context to generate more relevant, context-aware responses.
The Business Problem
Traditional document search requires users to know what they are looking for and where the information is stored.
A business knowledge assistant should allow users to ask questions naturally, such as: "What is our process for handling customer refunds?"
The system can retrieve relevant information, provide the required context to the language model, and generate a response based on the available knowledge.
The Solution
We designed a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflow using LangChain to connect business knowledge with an LLM. The solution covers the complete knowledge retrieval flow:
- Documents
- Document Processing
- Chunking
- Embeddings
- Vector Database
- User Question
- Semantic Retrieval
- Relevant Context
- LLM
- Context-Aware Response
How RAG Works
When a user submits a question, the system first converts the query into an embedding and searches the vector database for semantically relevant information.
The most relevant content is then retrieved and provided as context to the language model. The LLM uses this retrieved context to generate the final response.
This approach allows the assistant to work with business-specific information without requiring the model to have that information as part of its original training data.
LangChain's Role
LangChain provides the orchestration layer for the RAG workflow. It can coordinate document loaders, text splitting, embeddings, vector-store retrieval, prompt construction, and LLM interactions as part of a single application workflow. This makes it easier to build and evolve knowledge-based AI applications.
Knowledge Processing
The system processes source documents before they become searchable. The typical pipeline includes:
- Document ingestion
- Text extraction
- Document cleaning
- Chunking
- Embedding generation
- Vector storage
- Metadata management
Breaking large documents into meaningful chunks helps the retrieval system identify the most relevant sections for a user's question.
Semantic Search
Traditional keyword search depends heavily on matching exact words. Semantic search focuses on the meaning of the query and the available content. This allows the system to retrieve relevant information even when the user's wording differs from the wording used in the source documents.
Context-Aware Generation
After retrieving relevant information, the system builds a context for the language model. The LLM then uses the retrieved context together with the user's question to generate a response. This creates a more grounded interaction with business knowledge and reduces the need for users to manually search through large collections of documents.
Production Considerations
Building a useful RAG system involves more than connecting documents to an LLM. A production-ready knowledge assistant should consider:
- Data quality
- Chunking strategy
- Retrieval quality
- Embedding selection
- Prompt design
- Access control
- Data privacy
- Hallucination reduction
- Response evaluation
- Monitoring
- Logging
- Feedback loops
Business Applications
A knowledge assistant built with this architecture can support a variety of business use cases, including:
- Internal knowledge assistants
- Customer support
- Employee onboarding
- Policy and documentation search
- Technical documentation
- Product knowledge
- Operations support
- Enterprise information retrieval
Technology Stack
- Python
- LangChain
- Large Language Models
- Embedding Models
- Vector Database
- REST APIs
- Cloud Infrastructure
- Containerized Deployment
Key Takeaway
RAG is not simply about connecting an LLM to documents. A reliable enterprise knowledge assistant requires a complete system covering data ingestion, retrieval, context management, response generation, security, evaluation, and monitoring.
At Unistack Solutions, we design and build AI systems around real business requirements, combining software engineering, automation, data, and AI where they create practical value.
